Blinding & Subbase Concrete

Our Blinding Concrete range consists of factory-batched premixed concrete blends using 20 mm aggregate, specifically designed for use as blinding and subbase layers rather than as the main structural element. These mixes are available in 15, 20, 25 and 32 MPa compressive strengths and are typically placed as a thin, non-structural layer directly on the ground. Once placed and compacted, they provide a clean, level, and firm working surface, improving site conditions and preparing the base for subsequent structural concrete.

Blinding concrete is commonly used to form a temporary hardstand and sacrificial layer under slabs and footings, helping protect structural concrete from contamination and providing a consistent, stable base.

Typical Uses

Blinding Concrete mixes are used by builders, civil contractors, and concreters for:

1. Blinding / Subbase Under Structural Concrete

   • Thin layer beneath slabs, footings, strip footings, raft slabs, and pad foundations.
   • Provides a flat, stable base and separates structural concrete from soil and loose material.

2. Temporary Hardstands

   • Used to create a temporary hard, clean working surface for:
     • Setting out and fixing formwork
     • Placing and supporting reinforcement
     • Improving site access and working conditions

3. Clean Working Surface

   • Reduces contamination of structural concrete by mud, organic material, and loose soil.
   • Aids in accurate set-out, level control, and quality finishing of the main structural pour.

In short: these are low to moderate strength concretes used not as the primary structural concrete, but as a sacrificial or working layer beneath structural concrete elements.
